The foundry's description of the process involved in hand-stamping is as follows:

"We always like to advise that the nature of the hand-stamping results in a variable hand-made look, in that the character spacing may be uneven and that some letters may be rotated slightly or raised or lowered from the line of text, due to the rough surface of the bronze, and the nature of hand-hammering metal dies on the surface of the bell. The artisan executing the stamping can only use the outer square shape of the die in aligning each letter and can not 'see through" (x-ray style) the bell or the die to tell how each letter will end up. It also takes two people to do the stamping: one to hold the bell so that the inside surface (directly underneath each character as it is stamped) is in proper contact with a heavy anvil, and the second person who aligns and holds the die to the surface of the bell while he/she hammers the die with a heavy hammer, usually several times for each character to be created, in order for each letter to be clear and complete. When the entire hammering is finished, an artisan then goes over every letter with a rotary dremel tool to further emphasize the impression of every letter stamped, finally completing the job."
